News from the Needles

It is with deep regret that we post this announcement.

Paul Duval, a Needles pioneer, icon and friend to us all, died yesterday in a climbing accident at the Moonlight Ridge area. The accident involved mistaking the mark near the end of a rope for the mark at the center of the rope and resulted in rappelling off the short end.

Our condolences to his family and loved ones.

We, in Boston, received this news with deep regret.

Paul was a mainstay in the Boston climbing community for many years before his retirement and relocation to SD.

I climbed with Paul quite a lot and we had many, many great times together.

A truly sad day.

We, in Boston, received this sad news and share your feelings for Paul.

Paul was a mainstay of the boston Climbing community for many years prior to his retirement and relocation to SD.

We all shared his enthusiasm for climbing, his energetic life style and his odd wit, often captured in his cartoons.

He was proud to live his life at the sharp end of the rope and maintain his high standards even as he got older.

His passing will leave a void in many climbing communities from SD to Boston to Mexico.

We will miss you Paul
